SIGSAC Awards

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The SIGSAC Awards Committee is now open to receiving nominations for the awards. The awards will be presented at the 32nd ACM SIGSAC Conference on Computer and Communication Security (CCS), Oct. 13-17, 2025, Taipei, Taiwan.

DEADLINE FOR AWARD NOMINATIONS: The deadline for receiving nomination is midnight AOE, July 14th, 2025. Note that nominees and nominators are NOT required to be ACM or SIGSAC members.

Nominations should be submitted via e-mail to the chair of this year's SIGSAC Awards Committee: Dr. James Joshi (jjoshi@pitt.edu).


Award Overview

ACM SIGSAC offers two annual Awards: SIGSAC Outstanding Innovation Award and SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award. For more information on previous recipients, please visit the ACM SIGSAC Awards page.

Award Criteria

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Innovation Award: This award is given for outstanding and innovative technical contributions to the field of cybersecurity, privacy, trust and resilience that have had lasting impact in furthering or understanding the theory or development of secure, privacy-preserving and/or trustworthy systems.

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award: This award is given for significant contributions to the field of cybersecurity, privacy, trust and resilience by fostering research and development activities, educating students, or providing professional services such as the running of professional societies and conferences.

Nomination Process

Each nomination should be co-sponsored by at least 3 people, including the nominator. Each nomination must include:

1.    Proposed citation, up to 25 words

2.    Names of at least 3 sponsors (including the nominator)

3.    Succinct (100-250 words) description of the innovation/contribution,

4.    Statement justifying the nomination, and

5.    Curriculum vitae of the nominee. There is no nomination form as such.



NOTE: items (3) and (4) above should fit on one printable page (single column, at least 10pt type). Nominations should be submitted via e-mail (with subject "SIGSAC Innovation/Contributions Award nomination") to the chair of the 2024 SIGSAC Awards Committee: Dr. James Joshi (
jjoshi@pitt.edu).

The winners will receive the Awards at the 2025 ACM CCS conference. Self-nomination is not accepted. A nominator can submit at most 3 nominations. For sponsors, there is no limit to the number of nominees that one can sponsor.

DEADLINE FOR AWARD NOMINATIONS: The deadline for receiving nomination is midnight AOE, July 14th, 2025 (No Exceptions or Extensions). Note that nominees and nominators are not required to be members of ACM or SIGSAC.

Exclusions

The committee will adhere to the ACM Awards Committee Conflict of Interest (COI) guidelines. Particularly, the SIGSAC award committee members and chair are not eligible to be nominated for either award, and are not allowed to nominate and endorse candidates.

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award: Paul van Oorschot, Carleton University
Citation: For outstanding scientific contributions in applied cryptography, and authentication; and for co-authoring Handbook of Applied Cryptography, one of the most referenced books in cryptography.

Citation: For innovative research in applied cryptography, secure software systems, and blockchain technology, and for an emphasis on cryptography education

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Innovation Award: Dawn Song, University of California, Berkeley, Citation: For contributions to systems and software security, in particular, dynamic taint analysis for vulnerability discovery and malware detection.

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award: Trent Jaeger, The Pennsylvania State University, Citation: For leadership in the ACM SIGSAC community and exemplary contributions to security research and education, including the book "Operating Systems Security" and advances in software analysis and trusted computing bases.

2019

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Innovation Award: Wenke Lee, Georgia Tech, Citation: For pioneering contributions to network and systems security.

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Contributions Award: Jonathan Katz, George Mason University, Citation: For exemplary commitment to education in cryptography, through teaching and research, and for dedication to the advancement and increased influence of cryptography research.

o   SIGSAC Outstanding Innovation Award: N. Asokan, Aalto University, Citation: For pioneering research on fair-exchange protocols, trusted device pairing and mobile trusted execution environments that has had widespread impact and led to large-scale deployment.
