8th CCS 2001 Message from the Program Chair These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 8th ACM Conference on Computer and Communication Security, held November 5-8, 2001, in Philadelphia, PA (USA). In response to the call for papers, 153 papers were submitted to the conference. These papers were evaluated on the basis of their significance, novelty, and technical quality. As in previous years, reviewing was "double-blind": the identities of reviewers were not revealed to the authors of the papers and author identities were not revealed to the reviewers. The program committee met on June 10th at the Information Technology Department of University of Milan, in Crema (CR), Italy. Of the papers submitted, 27 were selected for presentation at the conference. The conference program also includes an invited talk and a panel. In addition to the main conference program, the conference comprises of two tutorials and two workshops. Workshops, introduced last year represent a successful forum to discuss specialized and emerging areas. The increasing number of submitted papers, the presence of organizations offering financial support, and the inclusion in the program of tutorials and workshops confirms a positive trends that reflects the increasing vitality and importance both of the field and of the conference itself. A conference like this just does not happen; it depends on the volunteer efforts of a host of individuals. There is a long list of people who volunteered their time and energy to put together the conference and who deserve special thanks. Thanks to all the members of the program committee, and the external reviewers, for all their hard work in the paper evaluation. Committee members were asked a considerable effort given the large number of submissions. I am also very grateful to all those who gave their assistance and contributed in forming this year conference program: Brian Snow, for the invited talk; Mike Reiter for organizing the panel and Allan Adler and Fred von Lohmann for their participation in it; Matt Franklin for choosing the tutorials; Prem Devanbu, Vem Paxson, Stuart Staniford, Stuart Stubblebine for giving the tutorials; Sushil Jajodia, Daniel Barbara, and Tomas Sander for organizing the workshops; the ACM CCS Steering Committee members for their support and suggestions; and the organizations that offered financial support. I am also grateful to those people whose work ensured a smooth organization process: Mike Reiter, who served as General Chair and took care of all the organizational aspects, Ari Juels for publicity, and Sabrina De Capitani di Vimercati for maintaining the Web pages and for helping in the review process. Last but certainly not least my thanks go to all the authors who submitted papers and all the attendees. I hope you find the program stimulating. PIERANGELA SAMARATI Program Chair
